Year of Sewing: February and March

I have sewn everyday in both months, bringing my total sewing days this year to 85.  I did miss some days, but I more than made up for them with many marathon sewing days.

I have been working on one really big project.  I’m making a quilt for the EOD Wounded Warrior Foundation.  Every May they have an auction to raise funds for the wounded warriors, and my husband, mother in law, her co-worker and I are making a total of 5 quilts for the auction.  We have a quilt for every branch of the service and a quilt that incorporates all uniforms from every branch of the US Military.

The quilt top I chose was pretty difficult.  This is my first quilt ever (if you don’t count the baby blanket I made once).  Cutting out 320 2 1/2″ by 2 1/2″ squares took a month in itself.  Then I had to cut out all the pieces and make the snowball squares and setting triangles.  The border consists of 21 x 3 1/2″ strips, but that didn’t really take that long.  I think the hardest part about it is that it’s made of recycled military uniforms and cutting out all those pieces from pants and tops was time-consuming.  It would have been much easier if they had all been from a one or two yard piece of fabric.

I plan on doing a blog about this later as I am going to embellish the snowball squares with something EOD related (not sure what yet).  Here’s a few pictures of what it looks like at the moment.

After finishing, I had a huge sense of relief and accomplishment.  This was a huge project for me.  I made a few more things this month, a few being a secret because they are for a swap.  I’m sending the package off today so I can talk about them next week.

What has everyone else been sewing recently?
